Lake of Remembrance (Single)

by Ken Verheecke

As a young boy... I did everything with my dad and when we lived in Hawaii my dad loved to go fishing and I was always with him. I was his shadow and as far as I was concerned, he hung the moon!

Many years later... during my teen years my dad would ask if I wanted to go fishing with him. At this point in life... hanging out with my dad wasn't cool and I really wanted to hang out with my friends... so, I would pass on fishing with my dad. I regret that now... ohhhhh, how I regret that!

I remember when I came home after my first year at Eastern Michigan University (1978), my dad asked if I wanted to go fishing with him in the Black Hills (South Dakota). My first thought was... "no..." but I really didn't know anyone. So I reluctantly agreed to go. I remember that day vividly. I was bored stiff... I couldn't wait for it to end. I had no interest in fishing. I decided to walk around the lake a little and find a restroom as well. Soon I found myself returning and I had a moment of clarity. Seeing my dad seated on the shore... watching his line I noticed how peaceful he was. In that brief moment... I was able to see the value this time.
